Research Focus
Psychosomatic Medicine promotes inter- and transdisciplinary research at the intersection of somatic and mental health. Our focus is on disorders that manifest with both physical and mental symptoms, such as eating disorders, stress-related disorders and anxiety disorders. We explore psychoneuroimmunological mechanisms and innovative treatments, including physical activity and novel psychotherapeutic approaches. We develop and implement patient-reported outcomes and digital health tools across medical specialties. Our research extends to the well-being of medical students.
General Facts
The University Hospital for Psychiatry II is a tertiary reference centre in the field of Psychosomatic Medicine. We provide comprehensive diagnostic work-ups and multimodal therapy programs that incorporate both cognitive-behavioural and psychodynamic approaches. We integrate evidence-based treatment guidelines and best practices into personalised treatment plans for patients with stress-related and associated disorders. Our clinical services include in-patient, day-patient, and out-patient programs, as well as a psychiatric-psychological consultation/liaison service.
Our research explores the complex interactions among physical, mental, and social conditions that contribute to psychosomatic and somatopsychic comorbidities. Using interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches, our research fosters innovative collaborations across specialties. The University Hospital for Psychiatry II is also home to the Health Outcome Research Unit, which focuses on patient-centred treatment evaluation from a biopsychosocial perspective and promotes digitisation in medicine.
Research
Eating Disorders
Contact Person: Barbara Mangweth-Matzek
Our research on eating disorders covers both psychological and physiological aspects: 1) Long term eating disorders, including severe and enduring eating disorders with a focus on childhood trauma, social relationships, body image, self-care, puberty, sexuality, pregnancy and menopause; 2) Remitted eating disorders; 3) Various stages of menopause and eating disorders; 4) Eating disorders in males and 5) Research on obese patients with bariatric surgery.
Clinical Psychology and Behavioural Medicine in specific settings
- Behaviour change in times of climate change
Contact Person: Katharina Hüfner
Climate change is a threat to the fragile alpine ecosystem, increasing stress and challenging our (mental) health. In a transdisciplinary approach, we explore factors of transformative climate action and resilience and investigate factors influencing behaviour change. - Otolaryngology
Contact Person: Roland Moschèn
The field of behavioural medicine and clinical psychology in otolaryngology has a specific focus on tinnitus. Our research identifies the individual coping strategies employed by people with chronic tinnitus, particularly in phases of heightened tinnitus perception. - Transplant Medicine
Factors for vascularised composite allotransplantation program development (Kumnig M, Kobler C, Zaccardelli A, Brandacher G, Talbot SG. Advancing vascularised composite allotransplantation: essential factors for upper extremity transplant program development. Front Transplant. 2024 Jun 11;3:1406626. doi: 10.3389/frtra.2024.1406626. (This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/))) Contact Person: Martin Kumnig –
Vascularised composite allotransplantation (VCA) is a promising reconstructive transplantation technique. Recent research investigates the role of team science, interdisciplinary cooperation and communication, and shared decision-making, when establishing and maintaining a VCA program.
Health Outcome Research
Contact Persons: Bernhard Holzner, Johannes Giesinger
Over the past two years, the team has worked on a range of clinical and methodological projects. These have focused on advancing patient-reported outcome (PRO) research in chronic diseases. The work is structured around several key research areas of our dedicated Health Outcome Research Unit:
- Methodological Aspects of PRO Research
Contact persons: Monika Sztankay, Lisa Wintner
This area focuses on developing PRO questionnaires, communication tools and harmonising terminology related to PRO score interpretation thresholds. The SISAQOL-IMI project (sisaqol-imi.org) is a prime example. It also involves establishing robust guidelines for interpreting PRO data and constructing resources like the newly developed EORTC Reference Values Database. - Psychooncology and Health-Utility Research
Contact persons: Eva Gamper, Anne Oberguggenberger
This initiative gained real momentum with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on assessing psycho-oncological treatment needs. It also includes work on the health-utility instrument QLU-C10D, a cancer-specific preference-based measure. - Electronic PRO Assessment Tools
Computer-Based Health Evaluation System patient portal functions when patients are at home and in the hospital. *Thresholds for clinical importance are used to highlight domains that require discussion with the health care provider. This domain focuses on designing and deploying digital tools, such as the electronic patient portal at the Medical University/Tyrol Clinics. These tools collect real-world PRO data, supporting treatment, research and quality assurance.
Psychotherapy and Trauma Research
Contact Person: David Riedl
Our research follows a psychodynamic approach to developmental psychopathology. We examine how early adversity, such as neglect and abuse, affects personality development and contributes to mental and somatic disorders in adulthood. We also assess the effectiveness of multimodal interventions. Our goal is to identify general mechanisms of change in psychotherapy. Key topics include mentalisation, epistemic stance and gender-specific effectiveness of psychotherapy.
Sports Psychiatry
Contact person: Katharina Hüfner
Somatic symptoms such as acute mountain sickness that can occur at high altitude are well characterised. However, there is still much to be learned about psychiatric symptoms. We investigate the differential, possibly opposite effects of high and moderate altitude exposure on mental health in individuals with preexisting mental disorders. Together with research partners at Eurac Research in Bolzano, Italy, we are using the controlled environment of TerraXcube for experimental hypoxia exposure. We use therapeutic climbing to investigate the effects of exercise on anxiety disorders.
Stress-Related Disorders and Psychoneuroimmunology
(This is an open-access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)))
Mental stress is clearly linked to somatic and psychiatric morbidity, but we still do not understand the neurobiological pathways of these associations. Mental stress has a well-known immunomodulatory effect, which is a fundamental concept in psychoneuroimmunology. We investigate the effects of mental stress on individuals with post COVID conditions and neurotransmitter precursor amino acids. We also evaluate the effect of exercise interventions on neurotransmitter precursor amino acids in individuals with anxiety disorders.
Well-being of medical students
Contact persons: Alexandra Huber, Stefan Höfer
Medical students and hospital physicians face high stress and performance pressure. Despite studying health, managing the well-being of personal is often neglected in medical education. Since 2015, annual online surveys have examined the factors influencing well-being. Findings showed that character strengths positively correlate with well-being, enhancing work engagement. Recent results highlight significant impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on the mental health of Austrian medical students.
